Happy Birthday Emily!

Yesterday was my sister Emily's 14th birthday! It was a night typical of my family's less glorious moments, but after a number of obstacles we all made it to Applebee's a little after 8pm to celebrate. In spite of all our frustrations getting there, we all had fun (except Rachel). It was a late night but well worth it!

Emily is one of the most dynamic 14 year olds you may ever encounter. She is 6'2'', talented, intelligent, and the youngest of 5 kids in a rather intense family. Any talent which us older siblings posses, Emily does too. She has Jesse's brains, Autumn's flair for the stage, David's athletic drive and of course my beauty and "verbal skills" (said with a note of sarcasm). She is a handful! I can't wait to see what Emily becomes someday, nothing would surprise me. She is a teenage soul all the way, brooding, giggly, boy crazy, self conscious, rebellious, and idealistic. Add these traits to her woman's body, somewhat adult intellect, and searching soul, and you have Emily.

This year has given me some interesting perspective on Emily. Now that I am the mother of a teenage girl I have a lot more sympathy for my mom that I used to. I am sure that I am not as sisterly as I once was, often functioning more like an aunt. On the other hand I have been so blessed as a sister by the way Emily has struggled through relating with Rachel. She was the most enthusiastic member of my family when I first mentioned the idea, has been incredibly encouraging and helpful at times, and has had the most trouble adjusting to Rachel's presence. Emily has really had the most to lose from the situation, and even in her frustration, has never stated that she wished I hadn't taken Rachel. She is also growing. She hasn't stayed stuck in one way of relating to Rachel. This tender heart has been more important than she may ever realize.

My prayer is that God will send His love and protection to Emily throughout her life. May God use the talent, beauty, brains and heart of this young woman which He created for His glory. May He say, "Satan you are not welcome here." May the world's jewels look cheap in the radiance of the good and glorious King of Kings. Happy Birthday Emmy Grace!

Too precious! I love how we both have sisters about 14 years younger than us. Emily is so cute, and it was great to read your tribute.

Love to you!
