Linda

This is an edited version of what I wrote to my friend Linda on her birthday (last Friday). She has been an invaluable friend, a "kindred" spirit, iron to my iron, and one of those who can unconditionally love me and challenge me all at once. I don't think I would have taken Rachel if it had not been for her and Julie's love and encouragement. She was also so gracious as to move out of our apartment so Rachel could move in. I really miss living with Linda. She is one of my favorite people to live with ever and I hope we get to do it again someday!

"I have this friend. She is one of those people that even as a young child exhibited an amazing strength, which has now matured into a beautiful woman who amazes those around her, and makes them wonder where she has come from.

She is sort of character authors invent for novels. She has a strong moral compass, is funny and compassionate. She can be described as both 'puritan' and 'uncouth'. She is a champion in situations where other's bend. She forges ahead with almost inhuman strength and yet tears up when thinking about a lonely animal. Life has both softened and hardened this woman, and now I see age doing a new work in the friction between her strength and weakness, self-knowledge and life's limitations. She must trust the Lord again and see Him anew.

Her name is Linda. She moves forward in faithfulness. She sacrifices for the sake of her friends and loved ones. She is someone who knows how to lay down her life for those around her, and her friend's are awed by it. More than that they love her, not just for what she does but for who she is. She is part childish inhibition, part grandmotherly wisdom, and part steel strength. It is impossible to not be drawn to the dichotomy and mystery of this woman, and it's a privilege to be there when when she just is. Oh to rest quietly with such a friend! The feeling is so common and yet so indescribable.
Happy Birthday Linda!"
